June Testing Season: The 3 Things You Must Do This Weekend

It is mid-June. For law enforcement and fire service agencies across the country, the summer promotional testing window is officially open.

If your written exam or oral board is scheduled for July or August, you are now in the critical 30-to-60 day preparation zone. This is the window where candidates either accelerate and separate themselves from the pack, or succumb to burnout and cramming.

If you want to walk into that room and command the panel, you need to pivot your strategy right now. Here are the three things you must do this weekend to set up your final push.

1. Stop Reading. Start Speaking.

By mid-June, you should be transitioning out of the "information acquisition" phase. If you are still passively reading the policy manual or highlighting textbook chapters, you are behind.

The oral board does not test your ability to read; it tests your ability to articulate complex concepts under pressure.

This Weekend's Action: Close the books. Record yourself on your phone answering three common questions:

  1. "Why do you want to be a supervisor?"
  2. "How would you handle a subordinate who is consistently late?"
  3. "Describe a time you failed as a leader."

Watch the playback. Count your filler words ("um," "like," "you know"). Look at your eye contact. The camera does not lie, and the panel will see exactly what the camera sees.

2. Build Your "In-Basket" Prioritization Matrix

If your assessment center includes an in-basket exercise, you cannot walk in and just start answering emails and memos. You need a pre-established matrix for how you prioritize information. For the full method, see Surviving the In-Basket: How to Prioritize Like a Commander.

This Weekend's Action: Build your 4-tier matrix.

  • Tier 1: Life safety, immediate liability, media/political exposure. (Handle immediately).
  • Tier 2: Operational disruptions, subordinate grievances. (Delegate or schedule).
  • Tier 3: Routine administrative tasks, long-term projects. (Schedule).
  • Tier 4: Informational memos. (File/Discard).

When you have a matrix, the in-basket stops being a test of speed and becomes a test of command logic.

3. Secure Your Frameworks

The biggest mistake candidates make in the final 30 days is trying to memorize scripted answers to 100 different scenarios. When the panel asks a question you didn't memorize, your brain will freeze.

You do not need 100 scripts. You need 3 frameworks.

You need a framework for tactical incidents (e.g., Assess, Isolate, Mitigate). You need a framework for personnel issues (e.g., Policy, Precedent, Personnel). You need a framework for community relations. Then check your answers against the three mistakes that tank oral board scores.

This Weekend's Action: Stop guessing what the panel wants to hear. Get the proven frameworks that top candidates use to dominate the room.

At Optimum Valor, we built The Oral Board Domination Guide, a comprehensive preparation system designed exclusively for first responder promotional interviews. It provides the exact structural formulas you need to answer any question flawlessly, even when your heart rate spikes.

Go Deeper: The Oral Board Domination Guide

I've sat on the scoring side of the table. Most candidates don't fail because they lack experience. They fail because they walk in without a structure. The Oral Board Domination Guide is the system I built to fix that: how to organize your answers, handle the scenario questions, and sound like a supervisor instead of a patrol cop.

Do not let a 30-minute interview define your 20-year career. It is June. The clock is ticking. Prepare with purpose. Speak with confidence. Lead at the next level. If speaking under pressure makes your mind go blank, use the 30-day promotion board anxiety plan.
